Authorities respond to school shooting threat posted online

Authorities are investigating threats to schools in Santa Barbara made by an unknown suspect on an online chat room.

“Thinking about shooting my classroom. Santa Barbara beware,” the suspect wrote.

Law enforcement began investigating the threat on Tuesday. The message did not specify a school in the district or a date.

City College as well as other schools in the district were advised to stay open.

An email was sent to all City College students on Tuesday morning addressing that there was a threat but no other information was given at the time.

City College didn’t initially tell students the details because they hadn’t confirmed the information, said Luz Reyes-Martin, interim public information officer at the college.

A follow up email was sent later by Erik Fricke, director of campus security, which was more detailed.

The Santa Barbara Unified School District office received the information about the threat first and alerted all schools in the area, as well as law enforcement.

City College students are encouraged to register their phone number for the school’s emergency notification system so they can receive text message alerts about possible safety risks on campus. To register, text “SBCC” to 55155.
