City College student Shane Richmond died this week, according to college officials.

The Board of Trustees acknowledged his death at its meeting Thursday.

After the announcement of his passing, Trustee Jonathan Abboud made a statement:

“I’d like to learn more about our orientation practices,” Abboud said. “Just to see where we maybe have some gaps in our education about alcohol and other drugs because it’s become a very regular occurrence.”

Richmond’s cause of death is unknown at this time.

The board also had a moment of silence for Richmond, whose father is NBA Hall of Famer Mitch Richmond, before going into a closed session.

“I am sorry to share that we’ve learned of the death of an SBCC student, Shane Richmond,” said Luz Reyes-Martin, director of public affairs and communications, in an all-employees email.

The email sent to employees by Reyes-Martin shared resources for grief services for the City College community, including a group healing and processing session at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at The Well and the availability of personal counseling for students through Student Health and Wellness Services.

“Shane’s passing is deeply upsetting and impactful,” Reyes-Martin said.

Details of a flag-lowering ceremony have not been announced.
