Delegates and senators from over seventy community colleges met this past weekend to discuss vital issues facing community college students all over the country.
Associated Student Senate President Atty Garfinkel, Vice President of External Affairs Omar Espinoza, Senators Ion Buga and Chloe Di Zhu represented City College at the Student Senate of California Community College’s General Assembly in San Diego.
Students at the annual assembly work to deliberate and vote on resolutions to help the community college system.
One motion that passed included “Common Assessment for Community Colleges,” which states that if students who have taken placement tests transfer from one community college in California to another, won’t have to retake their tests.
“Save Money, Save Paper, Save Trees” was another decree that passed, which encourages all associated student organizations across the state to go green or wireless, and recycle.
Senators attended breakout sessions and workshops where they were able to learn about parliamentary procedures, student apathy, and leadership skills.
“The breakout sessions were really helpful to me,” said Espinoza.
Espinoza was able to vote as a City College delegate this year.
“Omar did especially well considering it was his first General Assembly,” Garfinkel said. “He has fabulous potential, and I know he is going to go far.”
