City College women’s tennis team is back on track after a 5-4 victory over Canyons College during their home game Feb. 27.
The team is currently on a winning streak of three after winning their latest matches against Ventura, Antelope Valley, and lastly Canyons.
Even though the Vaqueros faced a few challenges with multiple players being ineligible, injured, or sick, they were able to go out with a win. These issues caused the team to have to play in doubles that had never played together before. They dominated their doubles against Canyons.
Canyons’ overall record currently is 1-8 while City College holds a 4-1 record.
The Vaqueros headed into the singles with a 2-1 lead after they won two of their doubles.
Yoshino Fujita and Callie Tzab, who usually play together, won their match. Ashley Birch and Lela Fenstemaker, who have never played together before, won as well. Birch’s usual partner is Jana Leowald, who was unable to play due to sickness.
Donatella Biscayart and Kate Brown played instead of the usual line up of Sierra Bolanos and Fenstemaker but couldn’t win the match for the Vaqueros. The two have never played a match together and had to try their best to make it work due to eligibility issues the team recently has been confronted by.
Even though head coach Chris Pope had to adjust his double lineups they still had a good outcome.
While the three matches were in full-on play, Pope walked around the different courts asking his players for things they picked up on. He asked them about strengths and weaknesses of their opponents and themselves as well as gave them advice on what to work on going into the next set.
Pope was not the only one who encouraged the players and complimented them, but also the players that were not able to play. The atmosphere was good and players like Nicole O’Malley and Jana Leowald could be heard screaming “Let’s go vaqs” or “Here we go SB” as well as complimenting them by telling them “Good serve.”
Fujita went into her singles match with zero losses in her previous matches and went out with a commanding victory.
Tzarb and Biscayart fell short in tightly contested three-set single matches after fighting through grueling matches.
Although the conditions weren’t easy due to high temperatures at the game. City College was able to win at home on the sunny day.
Both of the teams maintained good sportsmanship that kept a good atmosphere throughout all of the matches.
The Vaqueros return to action at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, playing away at Canyons.
