Rebound: Softball, swim and dive team come out on top in matches

The “Vaqueros Rebound” keeps the City College community up to date with short summaries of all Vaqueros spring 2024 athletics action. Missed a game and want to know what happened? Catch it on this week’s “Rebound.”

Tuesday, March 12 

Women’s Tennis: City College vs Glendale (W 8-1)

The Vaqueros competed against Glendale for their first conference game of the week at Pershing Park, ending in a loss of City College. Anna Kronberg defeated Glendale in a single set with scores of 6-1, 4-6, 10-4. Unfortunately, City College defeated Glendale in only one out of nine sets, ending with a score of 8-1.  

Women’s Softball: City College at Santa Monica (W 23-1)

City College’s softball team demolished Santa Monica, with an ending score of 23-1, and a total of five innings. Pitcher Alena Johnson pitched the entire game with 75 pitches and 45 strikes. Outfielder Gracie Verdugo hit a homerun at the bottom of the fifth, ending the game.

Men’s Baseball: City College vs Ventura ( W 10-4)

The Vaqueros beat the Ventura Pirates at their conference opener at Pershing Park with a total of 8 innings and a score of 10-4. City College maintained their lead with pitcher Jake Villar pitching a total of 6 innings and Coleton Dahl pitching the last two. 

 

Wednesday, March 13

Men’s Volleyball: City College vs Antelope Valley (W 3-0)

The Vaquero Men’s volleyball team beat Antelope Valley in the Sports Pavillion with an ending score of 3-0. City College beat Antelope in all three sets. Individual stats were not available for City College regarding the game against Antelope Valley College at the time of publishing. 

 

Thursday, March 14

Men’s Baseball: City College at Ventura (W 5-4)

City College traveled down to Ventura to play two out of three games during their conference. The Vaqueros scored a total of 5 points, with catcher Vince Gamberdella scoring two points from an RBI during the sixth inning.

Men’s Tennis: City College at Glendale ( L 8-1)

The Vaqueros played Glendale during their WSC- North Conference and unfortunately ended with a loss for City College. Duo Dominic Arnell and Connor Schloemer worked well together; ending with a score for duos 8-5. This was not enough for City College to catch up to Glendale.

Women’s Softball: City College vs LA Pierce W(16-0)

City College beat LA Pierce College at Pershing Park with an end score of 16-0 and a total of 5 innings. Leila Chisholm is 3 for 6 in her first 2 games, doubling and driving in a team-high 3 RBIs against LA Pierce.

 

Friday, March 15

Women’s Beach Volleyball: City College at Bakersfield (W 3-2)

City College’s beach volleyball team opened their conference against Bakersfield, and ended with a score of 3-2. The Vaqueros won 3 out of 5 sets against Bakersfield, with duo Olivia Medina and Ashley Rossi having two scores of 21-7 and 21-13.

Women’s Beach Volleyball: City College vs Santa Monica at Bakersfield (W 4-1)

The Vaquero beach volleyball team played their second game at Bakersfield against Santa Monica. City College only lost 1 out of 5 sets against Santa Monica, making a score of 4-1. Duo Jillian Zimmerman and Vanessa Cabeza beat Santa Monica with two scores of 21-18 and 21-15.

Men’s Volleyball: City College at Moorpark ( L 3-1)

The Vaquero men’s volleyball team traveled to Moorpark to play Moorpark College, ending in a tough loss for City College. The four set scores were 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, and 25-22. Individual stats were not available for City College regarding the game against Moorpark College at the time of publishing. 

 

Saturday, March 16 

Women’s Swimming and diving: City College at Ventura Aquatic Center (1st 632 pts.)

The swimming and diving team went to Ventura for the second Western State Championship game, and got first place with 632 points. Morgan Cederholm got first place in the 1-meter diving with a total of 243.5 points.

Men’s tennis: City College vs American River (L 4-5)

City College’s men’s tennis team lost to American River College at Pershing Park with an end score of 4-5. Connor Schloemer and Dominic Arnell had an end set of 9-7, yet Arnell and Schloemer showed a lot of determination on the court.

Men’s Baseball: City College at Ventura (L 12-13)

The Vaquero baseball team lost their winning streak during the last out of three games against Ventura. City College started off strong with Ethan Rodriguez scoring within the first inning. The Vaqueros could not keep up with Ventura, ending in a close score of 12-13.
