Rebound: Women and mens beach volleyball team win at recent games

Wednesday, Feb. 7

Men’s Basketball: City College vs. Moorpark (73-60) L

The Vaqueros men’s basketball team lost against Moorpark with a score of 73-60. The Vaqueros were down by five points within five minutes of the first quarter. By the second quarter, Moorpark gained a larger lead from the Vaqueros. Sophomore Isaiah Hicks led the first half finishing with 14 points, along with six rebounds and four assists by the first quarter. Hicks ended with 16 points overall.

Women’s Basketball: City College vs. Moorpark (65-57) L

The women’s basketball team took a loss against Moorpark with a score of 65-57. The first quarter ended with a score of 22-17. Both Lily Mires and Paityn Persson gained possession within seconds of each other. The Vaqueros were showing high aggression before Moorpark came alive with less than two minutes left of the second quarter. The first half ended with a score of 34-34. The Vaqueros took the lead soon after, though after a number of turnovers, Moorpark prevailed and secured the win.

 

Thursday, Feb. 8

Women’s Tennis: City College vs. Ventura (5-4) L

City College’s women’s tennis lost against Ventura College with a final score of 5-4 for their first game of the Western State Conference. The Vaqueros beat Ventura for the first two doubles matches, but lost the third match due to default. The Vaqueros were unable to field for the last two rounds of doubles and single matches, giving Ventura the point. Ventura beat the Vaqueros in the last four rounds of singles.

 

Friday, Feb. 9

Women’s Beach Volleyball: City College vs. Long Beach (4-1) W

The Vaqueros women’s beach volleyball team won against Long Beach City College at the Long Beach City College Tri Tournament. Olivia Medina and Ashley Rossi were the first pair in a set of three. They won each set with scores of 21-12, 16-21 and 21-11. The Vaqueros lost only one double throughout the entire match.

Women’s Beach Volleyball: City College vs. Orange Coast (3-2) W

The Vaqueros women’s beach volleyball team gained their second win on Friday against Orange Coast College at Long Beach. Duo Medina and Rossi showed high aggression throughout the set with scores of 21-16 and 12-11. Celia Espinoza and Carly Hanna were another pair who beat Orange Coast in three sets with final scores of 23-21, 16-2 and 15-8. 

Men’s Volleyball: City College vs. Irvine Valley (3-0) W

City College’s men’s volleyball team beat Irvine Valley College, winning three sets with scores of 29-27, 25-15 and 25-18. Outside hitter Cole Richards scored 18 points throughout the entire game along with middle blocker Andreas Shuetz, who scored 14. Richards had 13 kills per set with 17 total attempts.

 

Saturday, Feb. 10

Swimming and Diving: City College Larry Barrate Preview 1st place

The Vaqueros women’s swimming and diving team attended the Larry Barrate Preview at Ventura College, winning first place over ten other teams. The team won 570 points overall after securing their 8th WSC title. Freshman Carleigh Carrano received first overall in 1-meter diving. During the 200-Yard Medley Relay, all three Vaqueros relay teams finished in the top 4, including 1st and 2nd place.

Men’s Baseball: City College v.s. Chaffey (0-8) L

City College’s baseball team took a loss against Chaffey College with a final score of 0-8. The Vaqueros had trouble keeping up with Chaffey, resulting in multiple strikeouts and points given up to Chaffey. Pitcher Jake Villar threw four innings, striking out two opponents.

Men’s Basketball: City College vs. LA Pierce (62-61) W

The Vaqueros played against the Brahmas at LA Pierce, ending with a final score of 62-61. The Brahmas took the lead during the first half, ending with a score of 26-29, yet the Vaqueros powered through during the final half. David Coniglio scored 10 points overall during the second half with one assist and one turnover.
