Santa Barbara City College begins the process of finding a new Director of Athletics

City College will appoint a new Director of Athletics to start next fall.

Ellen O’Connor has been the Interim AD since recruitment violations caused Mike Warren to step down in June 2009. Interim appointments cannot continue beyond two years, according to the California Educational Code.

“The Athletic Director position at SBCC is an excellent job.” O’Connor said. “I expect this to be a very competitive hiring process.”

In 2009, the City College football program was hit with several sanctions by the Southern California Football Association for infringements. There were reports of minor incidents like players receiving meals at home games and housing-related infractions.

The program was put on probation for one year.

“I feel my time has been very productive. The football program is no longer on probation,” O’Connor said. “We’ve implemented processes that allow our coaches to demonstrate their knowledge of the California Community College Constitution and its Bylaws.”

O’Connor was paid a stipend of $1400 per month each academic year she remained the interim AD. She will continue to be a full-time faculty member in the Physical Education, Heath, Dance and Athletics Division.

City College saved $6,770 annually from salary and benefits since a permanent AD was not immediately hired.

Applications for the position will be initially reviewed by the selection committee, which will recommend candidates for personal interviews at City College. After the interviews have been conducted, the committee and Dean will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent-President for a final interview. The successful candidate will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval.

The final application filing date is on April 8.

“The person selected will get to work with an outstanding and hard working staff and student-athletes that love to compete with class,” O’Connor said.
