The Associated Student Senate’s general election campaign is coming up this week.

Two candidates are running for president, and the remaining applicants will fill three vacant officer positions.

Elie Katzenson, 18-year-old double major in political science and photography, has been a part of the senate since January, and is one of the candidates running for president of the senate.

“I’m running for president because I believe in the student government,” said Katzenson. “I’ve seen opportunities to make it better, and I also want to allow people to participate in these opportunities.”

Katzenson is building her platform on two issues: the importance of recycling and awareness of student events on campus. “I really want to specify how to recycle, compost recycling, I really want to do that for students,” she said.

The second presidential candidate is 19-year-old Geneva Sherman, also a political science major. Sherman is currently vice president of senate affairs—a position she’s filled the past school year.

“It’s been a really great experience,” she said. “I think that it’s something that will help me in the long run.”

Sherman said she wants to focus on helping future students get the kind of education they deserve to help them transfer and get an associate degree.

“I just want to make sure that those core classes are available for the students so they can get the best education here at our school,” she said.

“The budget cuts are a huge issue with the school right now. Millions of dollars are being cut and that’s coupled with the [University of California’s] enrollment freeze.

“There’s going to be about 17,000 students that are not going to be accepted to universities, which means that we are going to get a huge amount of students in our school next year.”

Wasabi Fan, 20, a film production major, applied for the public relations officer position. She said her goal is to raise awareness and promote the senate.

“I feel sorry that nobody knows that we exist,” Fan said. “That was my goal when I filled out my application for the senate. This was the issue that I wanted to change because we are doing so much and nobody knows about it.”

Fan is working on a short film about the senate, and did the campaign posters that are put up on kiosks at campus for each candidate.

The student trustee chair is going to be filled by Joel Negroni, who has been on the senate for one year. Negroni initially filled out an application for president but later changed his mind because he feels like he would be better fit in the role of the student trustee.

”I’ve seen so many things,” said Negroni, who was in the Marine Corps for five years.

The commissioner of club’s chair went to Adrian Tovalin, an international business major.

“I’ve always been a part of the student senate, even in high school,” he said.

This is Tovalin’s first year at City College and getting involved with the City College’s student. He said he didn’t feel like he knew much of the college and its students when he first stared here.

“But now that I have more experience after a year I want to be involved,” he said.

During this week both candidates for the presidential position are going to campaign against each other.

The general elections will be held online on Monday, April 23. Students are welcomed to vote on who they believe should represent the senate for the next academic year.
