Twin sisters named Scholar-Athletes of the year

Joan and Laura Cannon, along with being twin sisters, share an identical grade point average of 3.84 as they are named City College’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table honored the sophomore softball players last month during a press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Café.

The Phi Theta Kappa members, who were recognized for the 2010-2011 academic year, classes include Animal Biology, Math 131 and Film Studies 101.

They both hope to transfer to UC Davis in the fall.

Center fielder Joan Cannon and shortstop Laura Cannon have started for the Vaqueros for the last two seasons. Joan earned first-team All-Western State Conference honors as a freshman and Laura was an honorable mention.

“Joan is a talented center fielder who can gun you out from 180 feet in the blink of an eye,” head coach Paula Congleton said. “She has nine stolen bases and is hitting .310.

“Laura is also doing exceptionally well, batting .367, and is a huge part of the success of our infield,” added Congleton.

The Cannon twins played in last weekends Bash at the Beach tournament where the City College won three of their four games. The tallied victories improved their record to 28-5 with only three games left in the regular season.
