Fees per units up by $10 next fall

The fees for the cost per unit will increase from $26 to $36 this upcoming fall semester.

On March 24, Gov. Jerry Brown signed several of the “trailer bills” attached to the state budget for it to pass quicker.

The main budget bill, SB 69, is yet to be signed, but the trailer educational bill, SB 70, has been.

There will be a $129 million budget deferral from the end of the 2011-12 fiscal year to the end of the 2012-13 fiscal year along with the increase in unit fees.

Scott Lay, president and chief executive officer of the Community College League of California, wrote to City College Superintendent-President Andreea Serban about the concerns of the decision.

He mentions that Bakersfield College has received a grant from Dr. Norman Levan, a private donor, which he calls a lighthouse in the dark times. He thinks that could be a way for City College too.

“I can’t assure you when the dark night will end,” Lay wrote. “But I hope you’ll take the challenge of the high bar set by Dr. Levan and Bakersfield College and seek out the lighthouses in your community.”

According to Lay, it also seems less and less possible that there will be a tax ballot in June, but instead having a ballot at the same time as the general elections in November.
