City College women’s basketball teams depth led them to the MTXE Championship game but San Bernardino Valley capitalized on the Vaqueros’ mistakes to take the title.

The Vaqueros (4-1) had 27 turnovers and the No. 5 Wolverines (5-1) held City College to 10 points in the first half to down the Vaqueros 65-34, Saturday evening at the Sports Pavilion. San Bernardino has captured its second MTXE title in three years.

“I thought we had a great showing in the tournament,” head coach Sandrine Krul said. “We made it to the championship and unfortunately we played one half [on Saturday].”

City College guard Brooke Amenta and forward Keia Nobles earned All-Tournament team honors. Amenta, 5-11 sophomore, scored 53 points and grabbed 26 rebounds in three tournament games. Nobles scored 19 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and had 6 steals over the weekend.

“We’ve had someone different step up in every game,” said coach Krul. “[Friday], it was Brooke Amenta in the post, the night before it was our bench and the game before that, it was Mhiah [Vickers].”

Sophomore Sarah Crane had a big outing in the Vaqueros 75-70 semi-final win over Riverside College. She scored 14, grabbed 7 boards, dished 4 assists and added 4 steals. Nobles scored 14 and grabbed 6 rebounds.

“They both played awesome. They kept cutting, they kept shooting and kept attacking and it really wore [Riverside] down,” Amenta said of Crane and Nobles.

The Vaqueros blew out San Diego Mesa 66-20 in their first MTXE game. City College out rebounded Mesa 40-28 forced 37 turnovers and held the Olympians to 18 percent shooting from the field.

“I’m really proud of our subs and our starters only played about 15 minutes,” said coach Krul after the Mesa game. “Stefanie, JT [Thompson] and [Jessica] McGowan were great off the bench, I’m really proud of the way they stayed disciplined. Jasmine Mata was awesome too.”

After starting the season with five straight home games, the Vaqueros travel to Bakersfield for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, Nov. 21 and won’t play at home again until Jan. 19.
