Fiery Vaq spikers open conference play with 3-2 win

City College opened its conference schedule on Friday with an impressive 3-2 come-from-behind road victory over Santa Monica.

The scores were 25-23, 21-25, 27-29, 25-18, 21-19.

“We came out on fire,” head coach Armen Zakarian said. “We cooled off in the second and third sets but made a few adjustments and came away with the victory.”

Cody Kreitzer and Ty Dudley-Mann led the way with 16 and 10 kills, respectively ,to help City College win its fourth consecutive match.

The Vaqueros were playing their first match in two weeks, yet showed little rust whilst improving their season record to 6-2. Jordon Dyer tallied 41 assists and Chris Utroske added seven kills and nine blocks.

“It was a full team victory,” Zakarian said. “We brought in a bunch of different players and it came out in our favor.”

City College’s next game is against Moorpark College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Moorpark.
