Men’s volleyball starts off the season with pair of wins

The men’s volleyball team swept their two matches at Santa Monica College Saturday.

The squad started off the day against San Diego Mesa, demolishing them in straight games, 30-24, 30-22, 30-25.

Its second match wouldn’t be such a walk in the park.

They faced off against Grossmont for the second consecutive weekend, with similar results.

The schools traded wins in the first four games, (25-30, 30-25, 25-30, 30-26) before Grossmont moved ahead 11-7 in the final game.

But with strong play by Libero Andrew Thomason and Opposite Justin Hertlein, the team came back to win 16-14 and take the match.

“They showed this team has some real focus to come from behind and finish on top in a fifth game,” said coach Melody Parker.

Men’s volleyball record is officially 2-0, but its on a five match win streak after last Saturday’s three straight wins.

While they are off to a solid start to the year, Parker knows there is room for improvement.

“As the season goes on we need to improve on our weaknesses and that’s what we will be starting on tomorrow,” said Parker.

The Vaqueros will play a pair of matches against Palomar and San Diego City College February 13 at Palomar College.
