Column – Right to lifers target black women in racial conspiracy

I couldn’t remember a time I had been more pissed off.

Browsing the Los Angeles Times Web site, I came across an article named “Anti-abortion activists see a racial conspiracy.”

Intrigued and perplexed, my confusion couldn’t compare to the anger and disgust I felt when reading it. Because it turns out, pro-lifers aren’t just using religion and supposed morals to back their message anymore.

They’ve decided that a more appropriate and efficient tactic to secure more supporters, specifically more black supporters, would be to manipulate the entire African-American community.

Georgia’s Right to Life anti-abortion group, partnered with the Radiance Foundation, whose members support abstinence and adoption, have decided, according to the Times article, that “black women are targeted for abortion in an effort to keep the black population down.” And not only are they creating this disgustingly disturbing conspiracy – they’re sharing it with the world.

They say black women rank the highest in terms of seeking abortions. Socio-economic conditions, lack of health education, and other possible factual or explanatory evidence was neither considered nor pursued.

My only explanation is that the brilliant minds of these two groups got together, looked at some statistics, and made bets on who could think of the most ridiculous reasons as to why the numbers for black women were as high as they were.

Aside from the terribly obvious holes in this campaign, like lack of logic, the most offensive part of the campaign isn’t how outlandish and irrational it is – it’s the billboards.

The picture accompanying the Times article shows a billboard for the campaign, which contains a photo of an African-American baby’s face, coupled with the caption “Black children are an endangered species.”

Last time I checked, African-Americans were a part of the human race – the same “species” as Asians, Caucasians, Hispanics and every other ethnic group on the planet. So not only is it inaccurate to refer to the black community as a singled-out species – it’s downright bigoted.

My pro-choice standpoint might shed an obviously biased light on my views of the matter, but I acknowledge that some aspects of the pro-life perspective make sense because abortion is something sensitive and personal with no real right or wrong.

It frankly sickens me that these anti-abortion groups would sink so low as to take advantage of an entire community of people, just for the sake of beating the other side.

Maybe these pro-life groups were out of marketing ideas and needed a “fun,” fresh approach to share their cause. If so, here’s a little piece of advice for the brilliant blokes behind the campaign and its ever-offensive slogan: referring to a group of people as a separate species does not make for cute, catchy advertising.
