‘Diversity Movie Project’ screens in City College campus center

Colors of Diversity: The Diversity Movie Project, a free film screening each Tuesday in the Campus Center, began last week.

“I want everyone to be able to look at others through different eyes,” said Associated Student Senate President Atty Garfinkel.

“We need to understand where other students are coming from, and the history of their race.”

Garfinkel added “the student body needs to look around and see the number of diverse faces in their classrooms. There isn’t just one demographic of majority or minority.”

A movie with a relevant ethnic theme will screen at 3:45 p.m. every Tuesday in the lounge of the Campus Center. The next film scheduled is the documentary “The Cats of Mirikitani,” director Linda Hattendorf’s account of a Japanese-American homeless artist living and painting near the World Trade Center at the time of 9/11.

The first screening on Sept. 14 was “Walk Out”, a film set in the 1960’s about young Chicano Americans protesting inequality in East Los Angeles high schools. Student advocate Omar Espinoza selected it because it’s a personal favorite.

“Out of the 21 people who stayed, one student came up to me and said he learned a lot from the movie,” Espinoza said. “It’s pretty big, even if only one person learns something from it.”
