SBCC ready for Student Senate elections

With Student President Ruby Limón ready to transfer, the Student Body elections are just around the corner. Who will take her place?

The current candidates for president—all of whom are on the Student Senate—are Jeffrey Englert, Ola Smith and Aaron Waldman. They have committed themselves to ensure efficient representation of City  College students and improve the communication between students, faculty and staff, according to their published candidate’s statements.

The 2011-2012 elections will be held from 8 a.m. April 25 to noon April 29 via campus Pipeline.

To run for office, candidates are required to have at least a 2.0 GPA, be enrolled in five or more SBCC units, and be in good academic standing, as described by Student Code of Conduct.

After filling out their applications and gathering signatures from vice presidents, deans, instructors and 200 students, the candidates turned in a platform describing their goals and their new ideas.

  • “As President, my main goal would be to raise awareness [of Student Senate] and help out the school programs that are suffering from the budget cuts,” said Smith, vice president of student affairs.
  • “I want to create a program to connect students and organizations that will involve them with local projects and community services,” wrote Waldman, the senate’s student advocate.”
  • “I would like to see the … senate become more involved with fundraising projects and implement well-planned monthly events to raise money for our school,” wrote Englert, vice president of external affairs.

Staffing informational tables and hanging election posters are the key campaigning activities planned by the candidates.

President duties include serving as the chief representative for the Student Body, participating in campus committees, and carrying out the provisions of the senate Constitution.

The president is also required to report on student activities at the Board of Trustees meetings and meet monthly with the college president.

Officials have worked hard to make the voting easy and simple. Students will receive a brief e-mail on their Pipeline account with a link to the Pipeline login page. Next, students will link to the ballot. Voters must be current SBCC students and can vote only once.
