Vaqueros forward Blayne Shoffit (No.2) comes in to steal the ball successfully from Canyons defensive player Kailey Marquez (No. 12) during the first half of the match against College of the Canyons, Friday Sept 18, at La Playa Stadium. City College walked away with 1-0 for its fourth win of the season out of five games.

The Vaquero women’s soccer team came out swinging with a goal in the first two minutes to beat College of the Canyons 1-0.

The Canyon Cougars were in for a quick surprise as City College defender Lena Gustafsson scored the only goal of the game unintentionally.

“I was actually looking to cross the ball,” said Gustafson about the game winning score she sank at the very start of the match.

When asked about the aggressive play in the first few minutes of the game Gustafsson commented, “we go hard.”

Both teams played excellent defense denying every attempted goal the rest of the game which led to a very intense second half of the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex Camarillo blocked six Cougar shots in the game to complete the shutout win for the Vaqueros. The Cougars had more shot attempts than City College but Camarillo stopped them all in their tracks.

“I was just glad we could shut out the game,” Camarillo said.

Assistant Coach Goffin Boyoko was very audible from the sidelines, providing words of encouragement and praise.

“This game was different from the Chaffey game because we were able to close out the game, these are the types of teams we will be facing at playoffs,” said Boyoko as he weighs in on the previous game against Chaffey College. Boyoko’s outlook on future games provides a sense of assurance in the team’s abilities.

The win gives the Vaqueros a 5-0-1 record with their next game coming against Santa Monica at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at La Playa Stadium.
