SBCC softballl wins gold at Golden West tournament

City College took home the championship at the 35th Golden West Invitational over the weekend in Huntington Beach.

The Vaqueros finished the weekend 4-1.

Right fielder Tara Crawford took the MVP award in the tournament while catcher Lauren Larabell earned all-tourney honors. Crawford had a batting average of .636 (7-11) with three RBIs over the weekend. Larabell batted .533 (8-15) with five runs scored and three stolen bases.

“Lauren had a great weekend,” head coach Paula Congleton said. “Once again, she’s the top hitter in our conference and she’s the top hitter on our team.”

The Vaqueros split the first two games last Friday against Orange Coast and Chaffey, which put them in a tie for the No. 2 seed in the 12-team tournament.

“Kind of all weekend, we actually started out slow,” Congleton said. “We didn’t score right off the bat.”

Crawford went 3-3 with two RBIs in Saturday’s quarterfinal and Alyse Harris pitched seven innings of no-hit softball, striking out seven without walking a batter. The team went on to beat Oxnard 7-2 to advance to the semifinals.

City College doubled up Moorpark in Sunday’s semifinal 6-3. The Vaqueros dominated Moorpark last season, beating them by a combined score of 21-0 in three games.

The Vaqueros advanced to the finals against Southwestern in the Sunday’s second leg. City College battled back from a 3-0 deficit for the second time that day and won 8-4. Bryn [CQ] Thompson was 3-3 in the game and hit a go-ahead, two-run double to take the lead 5-4 in the fourth inning.

“One of the things we know is that we can come back when we’re behind no matter what inning it is.” Congleton said. “I don’t like to play ball that way, but we know at least that we have capability of coming from behind.”

City College will look to continue its roll against Bakersfield at 4 p.m. Thursday in Bakersfield.
