Star freshmen looks to turn things around for the Vaqs

Freshman Jessica Domenichelli has taken City College’s women’s soccer team by storm with her blistering pace and  appetite for goals.

The Vaqueros started their 2010 campaign on fire, going 4-0-1, scoring 12 goals and only conceding four.

Domenichelli, a 5’7″, striker has already notched eight goals in four games, showing no freshman nerves for the undefeated Vaqs.

“I come from a sports family, everyone is into sports, my sister [Danielle Domenichelli] is a professional runner,” she said. “And as for goals, I have always scored goals.”

The confident freshman comes out of El Dorado Hills, Calif. She started playing soccer at the age of five with her twin brother as her prime competitor.

Being on the field makes her feel very confident and at the same time is an escape from her day-to-day struggles.

“Jessica is very focused and poised when she is on the field,” said teammate Hannah Zech.

“She’s a good teammate by listening to others and leading by example.”

However, the Vaqs almost missed out on the opportunity of receiving the high school MVP.

“I wanted to play for a UC school, but I didn’t have the best grades,” Domenchelli said. “But I really like Santa Barbara because it gives me a chance to find more options.”

Although the team is young, featuring 15 freshmen, Domenchelli believes this youthful exuberance could be beneficial.

“Yes we are very young, but we are building strong team chemistry,” she said. “We bond on and off the field, and this team playing style fits me.”

She believes the biggest transition from high school to college was the pace of the game.

On the field she tries to imitate her favorite player, World and Euro Cup champion with Spain, David Villa.

Head coach John Sisterson is excited about having Jessica at his disposal.

He feels that she is a real threat and offers a different kind of offensive weapon.

Domenchelli is not only looking to excel on the soccer field, this time around she also wants to achieve a bachelor degree in business, and wishes to transfer to a four-year university, and ultimately play professionally abroad.
