The City College Women’s golf team finished 7th at the Desert Classic tournament in Indian Canyon, Palm Springs on Aug. 11 and 12.

The Vaqs were at 5th place on Friday with 324 strokes. Freshman Kaitlyn Gatena turned in a 3-over-par 75. Last year’s Western State Conference player of the year Asaka Sim shot a 79 and Jenna Boyle tallied an 83 for the Vaqs.

Coach Melendez hoped to pick it up for Saturday, but the team shot a 322, totaling them to 656 and dropping them to 7th place for the tournament.

“The team played okay, but both Kaitlyn Gatena and Anna Samson stood out,” Melendez said.

Kaitlyn Gatena, a freshman from Westlake, shot the lowest score among the team with a total of 154 (75-79), and Anna Samson shot an impressive 159 (81-78), but her score didn’t contribute to the Vaqs total because the tournament used a “five play, four score” format.

The Vaqueros host the conference No. 2 at Alisal Ranch, on Monday Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
