Student Senate to focus on charitable causes

As the semester comes to its mid-point, the Associated Student Senate has decided to incorporate a new focus on their agenda: charitable causes for our community.

The first cause was a Student-of-the-Month luncheon that six McKinley Elementary School students had with City College senators at 11:45 a.m. March 8.

After welcoming the students, senators Geneva Sherman and Ola Smith took them on a tour of the campus followed by lunch. To finish, the students were given City College memorabilia.

“There is no better way to give back to our community than by inspiring our youth to work hard in school,” said Ruby Limón, associated student senate president.

Based on their hard work and academic standing, only one student per grade level was selected for the luncheon.

“Giving those students the opportunity to come here [City College] and realize that higher education is available for them was great,” said Smith, associated student senate vice president of senate affairs. “It really helps them [establish] long-term goals for their future.”

Both Limón and Jeffrey Englert, associated student senate vice president of external affairs, shared their thoughts of why this event was important.

“I believe this will spark an interest on students to seek for higher education,” said Limón.

“It allows the younger students to have something to look forward to, and to show them their hard work can, and will pay off,” said Englert.

The second cause is a “Slip n’ Slide” fundraiser event, which is tentatively planned to take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 21 on the West Campus.

Eve Charbonneau, associated student senate public relations officer, who brought this item into discussion, explained where she got the idea.

“I heard about slip and slides being done on campus before and I thought it was a fun event for everyone,” said Charbonneau. “Santa Barbara is known for its great weather, so why not use that to our advantage?”

Charbonneau talked about the reasons “Slip n’ Slide” would be of great significance for our community.

“The profits would go to an organization or a club that Student Senate feels is appropriate, but we have yet to talk about [whom] specifically we want the donations to go to,” said Charbonneau.

She also described how this fundraiser would expand awareness of the Senate throughout students and the campus.

“It would be a great opportunity for students to learn more about Student Senate and get involved,” said Charbonneau. “I think it would be great to see all City College students just having a good time together.”

“All [you] have to do is sign a waiver and give a small donation to a good cause and then slide down a big slippery tarp—who wouldn’t want to do that?”
