City College will spend $48,000 to replace two gas pipes on campus that are responsible for supplying buildings with natural gas to run equipment.
The first gas pipe is located in a low traffic area of West Campus behind the Facilities and Operations Building. The second pipe will be repaired by the student services building and Parking Lot 1A.
The gas supply to nearby buildings may need to be turned off during the repair; if this is the case, advance notice will be given.
The college conducts annual tests of gas lines, usually resulting in similar but smaller repair projects. Leaks were detected at the Student Services Building. The existing piping runs under the landscaping and equipment enclosure on the north side, and would be very expensive to replace. To save money, the plan is to reroute into the parking lot for easier access for future repairs.
At the Facilities and Operations Building, the existing piping does not meet code and new piping will follow the same layout.
The contractors are set to begin work on Tuesday June 6, and are scheduled to complete the project by Tuesday June 21. Parking Lot 1A is anticipated to remain open during the majority of construction.
The pipes have been regularly tested by an outside agency to confirm safety until they had the opportunity to replace.
