Brief – City College reopens its doors

City College has decided to reopen all its campuses Monday as firefighters increase containment of the Jesusita Fire.

The blaze had caused the school to close its doors both Friday and Saturday.

The decision to close the school was mainly based on the fact that so many Santa Barbara residents were forced to evacuate their homes by Friday morning, Superintendent-President Andreea Serban said.

“We’ve got quite a few messages from our staff that have been evacuated,” Serban said.

The fire burnt more than 8,700 acres, destroyed or damaged circa 80 homes, and required the services of more than 4,500 firefighters from all across the state.

A press release was issued Sunday afternoon, to inform students that the school would reopen. Text messages were also sent this morning using AlertU, an emergency messaging system, that the president says is underutilized.

“I hope more people sign up, because it’s a very efficient way to tell people what’s going on,” Serban said. Only 1100 numbers are currently in its system.
