Brief – Cafeteria offers cheaper eats with ‘5 at 5’

The City College cafeteria is doing its part to help cash-strapped students by offering a 5 p.m. dinner special, including beverage, for $5.

“The way the economy has hit people, we thought we could give students a good deal,” said Donna Faulkner, evening supervisor for City College’s Campus Center dining hall.

It also provides a creative opportunity for the student chefs.

“It stretches their ability and their talent,” she said.

Faulkner emphasized that what gets made isn’t by any ‘executive decision’ on her part. Instead, she said she prefers to let the students have a little freedom “to spread their culinary skills.”

Student chefs like Paul Bartholomew get to try out dishes that normally aren’t covered by the school’s culinary program.

“They’re fun,” Bartholomew said. “They give you a chance to utilize what you have and to try new flavors.”

As many as three student chefs may work on the bonus dish the day it’s offered, but only a few trays of vittles get made at any time. So, it’s better to get there early, as some selections might run out fast, Faulkner explained.

There are signs posted in and around the cafeteria announcing ‘5 at 5,’ but Faulkner said that whatever dish it will be that evening may not be decided upon until the late afternoon.

The specials have grown quite popular. Faulkner explained that sometimes patrons come in to see what’s cooking and say they’ll be back at 5 p.m. instead.
