CD Review – ‘xx’ by the xx

After witnessing their incredible performance at Coachella, I had high expectations for my first listen through the xx’s debut album. And they didn’t disappoint.

Originally from London, England, the xx has joined the indie rock movement with complex, slow-building songs that truly capture the listener’s attention. The self-titled album begins with an epic instrumental section and never lets up.

The 11-song set features thoughtful lyrics, unique guitar patterns, and beautiful vocals from bassist Oliver Sim and lead singer-guitarist Romy Madley Croft. The pair finds creative ways to weave their voices together, and it makes for some very dynamic and alluring songs.

Even more fascinating is the way each song connects to the next, as if the album is telling a story. Possibly the strongest piece is “Basic Space,” which features heartbreaking lyrics and rich harmonies between Croft and Sim. “Islands” and “Heart Skipped a Beat” are just as compelling.

Although they aren’t nearly as riveting on the album as they are during live performances, it’s hard to imagine that the xx could have a stronger debut. Let’s hope they keep it up.
