SBCC Music Concert Series to end with 4 shows and a bang

SBCC Music Concert Series will end the semester with a bang, putting on four concerts in just five days between Friday, April 28, and Tuesday, May 2.

With summer just around the corner, students and community members will be able to enjoy both symphony music or jazz at the Jazz Choir Concert, Symphony Concert or Big Band Blowout! Or, they can enjoy their music with dinner and drinks at the Jazz Combo performance at SOhO Restaurant and Music Club.

The Jazz Choir, made up of students from the Vocal Jazz class taught by Ken Rayles, will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, located at 1535 Santa Barbara St., Santa Barbara. General admission for the performance is $10, and $5 for students and seniors.

The City College Symphony’s event “A Night at the Opera” will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at the Garvin Theatre. The concert is already sold-out, but people wanting to get on the waitlist for a ticket can sign up at the Garvin Theatre box office.

The performance will feature well-known opera singer and City College alumnus Eduardo Villa.

“Watching opera on TV or on the radio is nothing compared to watching it live,” music instructor James Watson said. “It’s a completely different experience.”

This will be the symphony’s main performance of the spring season, and will be directed by associate music professor James “Jim” Mooy.

“There will also be a couple pieces at the end that everyone will recognize that aren’t on the program,” Mooy said.

City College’s jazz “Big Bands,” which include Good Times, Lunch Break, and Monday Madness, will perform at the Big Band Blowout! 7 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Garvin Theatre.

Good Times will be directed by music professor Eric Heidner, Lunch Break will be directed by Mooy and Monday Madness will be directed by music instructor Isaac Jenkins.

This will be the last of several big band concerts this semester. However, this concert will be nearly all new music. General admission for both “A Night at the Opera” and “Big Band Blowout!” will be $15, and $10 for students and seniors.

On Tuesday evening, the Jazz Combo concert will feature several groups that are in the jazz combo class at City College.

“It can be summarized as culmination and payoff,” said Carlos Maya, a City College orchestra and jazz band member. “Essentially [it’s] all our work and time we’ve invested in one event.”

Many of the students are also in the big bands and will perform at the Big Band Blowout! the prior evening. Admission for the concert is open to all ages and will be $10, with tickets available online and at the door.
