Rebound: Baseball opens with two wins, Women’s basketball paused

New for 2022, The Channels will have short recaps of all City College sporting events for the week published every Mondays and Fridays. The “Vaqueros Rebound” will provide the City College community with a place to keep up with all 11 spring sports programs. 

Thursday, Jan. 27

Baseball: City College 7 at Chaffey 3 

Owen Crevelt’s three RBI double capped a five-run top of the ninth as the No. 12 Vaqueros rallied past the host Panthers on opening day at Azusa Pacific University. Jake McBride earned the win in relief allowing two hits with three strikeouts and a walk over the final three innings. Pearce Blaney launched a two-run home run as City College notched their fifth straight win in a season opener.

Friday, Jan. 28

Softball: City College 8 vs Saddleback 10

The Vaqueros scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but had their streak end with the winning run at bat on opening day. Sarah Hammons went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and Natalie Depasquale also had two RBI, but the visiting Bobcats outhit City College 10-for-23 to 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position. The Vaqueros continue their five game homestand with a doubleheader against Taft College on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 12 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 29

Track and Field: ‘On Your Marks Open’ at Westmont College

Kaymen Davis won the long jump with a 6.04m leap. City College had eight finishers in the top three for their events. On the men’s side, Aidan Mosley in the 200 meters and Grant Spicer in the high jump notched second place finishes. Zia Frausto finished third in the 200 meters for the women. Up next for City College is the Moorpark Open on Friday, Feb. 4.

Baseball: City College 5 vs Chaffey 4

Andrew McKenna’s bottom of the ninth fielder’s choice forced an error that scored Pearce Blaney to win the No. 12 Vaqueros (2-0) home opener. Andrew Guardino struck out all three batters in the top of the ninth to earn the win. Starter Decker Mac Neil scattered five hits and three runs with two earned over four innings. This win is Head Coach Jeff Walker’s 200th at City College. The Vaqueros are at Golden West on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.

Men’s Basketball: City College 51 at Ventura 91

Adam Weingard led City College (7-14, 2-5) with 12 points and four rebounds, but was the only Vaquero in double figures on a tough shooting night at the VC SportsPlex. Luke Sinclair added eight points off the bench. However the host No. 12 Pirates were hot all night, shooting 58.8% from the field. The Vaqueros will host Oxnard College on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. 

Women’s Basketball: City College at Ventura

The Vaqueros (9-11, 4-2) had their game against the Pirates postponed. Additionally, the rescheduled home game between City College and the Pirates that was set for today (Mar. 31) has been postponed as well. The next scheduled game for the Vaqueros is on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. against Oxnard College at the Sports Pavilion.

Sunday, Jan. 30

Men’s Golf: Round One at Pt. Conception Open

City College teed off for the first time since March 2020 with the first round of the Pt. Conception Open at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc on Sunday. The team includes Valentin Barrull, Ryan Gay, Gabe Marmon, Jonathan Medina, Coleman Mortensen, Diego Palladino and Caleb Rodriguez, led by first season head coach Ernie Carrasco. Final results will be covered in the Friday edition.
