The secret weapon of City College’s successful soccer program is humble British import and former competitive player, John Sisterson.

Sisterson came to Santa Barbara in 2004 to recruit players for Texas A&M. He expressed interest in a position at City College, upon hearing that the women’s head coach may be leaving.

“I couldn’t believe the facilities, the location, and everything,” Sisterson said. “I fell in love with it.”

In June 2004, he became a part of the coaching staff and has benefitted the soccer program ever since, boasting a current 159-53-42 record at City College.

“I think it’s about surrounding yourself with good people,” Sisterson said. “I think I’ve done that. The athletic staff here has been very important.”

Assistant coach, Paul Hart, has been working with Sisterson since his days at Texas A&M.

“It’s one of those perfect balances where John has that experience and that knowledge,” Hart said. “I just try to bring passion and enthusiasm.”

Sisterson believes that academics are an important part of the City College program, having a bachelors and masters degree in education himself.

“As long as they perform well on the field and in the classroom,” Sisterson said. “That’s why we’re here and we’re here to move them [players] on.”

“You’ve just got to work hard every day,” Sisterson added. “You’re going to get your knocks and you’ve got to pick yourself up. If you work hard and take care of business on a daily basis, you’ll get success.”

Sisterson’s resume includes a gold medal as head coach of the U.S. Women’s Deaf soccer team. His goals for the City College program are simple.

“You know, I’m hoping it’s going to be the women’s team taking the Western State Conference,” Sisterson said when asked about his favorite moment coaching at City College. “Because, that’s never been done.”

“Its about the team, its not about me. It’s about my players. If the girls can win the WSC, its about them.”
