The City College women’s soccer team has an impressive 8-1 record this season.

Their first loss was hard fought Thursday against Ventura College, a team that has won eight Western State Conference titles in the last ten years.

“We were never firing with all cylinders,” head coach John Sisterson said, regarding the 1-0 loss.

Ventura scored early in the first half, of a corner kick, then spent the remainder of a game playing a strong defense against an aggressive Vaqueros team.

“We don’t go as hard on them subconsciously,” midfielder Katie Voss said.

Ventura College has a notoriously excellent women’s soccer program, and upon defeating City College last year, they went on to win another conference title.

“I think last year we lost to Ventura three times,” captain Jessica Domenichelli said.

Despite the heartbreaking game, City College are still placed first in their division, boasting only one loss this season, over Ventura College’s 8-2 record.

“The conference won’t be won or lost with this game,” Sisterson said.

The Vaqueros play Ventura College once more during regular season in November.

“We’ve been playing really well as a team,” Domenichelli said. “Everyone individually has a lot of talent. Hopefully we’ll move on from the loss.

Domenichelli currently stands second place in her division for points and was named Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Athlete of the Week in September. The sophomore forward also holds a record at City College for the most goals per season in 2010, with 25.

Voss, former San Francisco State starter, adds strength to City College’s midfield line-up, and is third in her division for points scored.

Not only do the Vaqueros deliver on field, they also boast a 3.16 grade point average for the team.

Their next game is at 7 p.m. on Thursday at La Playa Stadium, against Cuyamaca College.
