City College softball team tallies walk-off victory

The City College softball team capped off its season with a 7-6 comeback victory over Hancock College in its season finale at Pershing Park.

Laura Cannon belted a three-run, walk-off home run to end the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“It was one of the most memorable hits of my softball career,” Cannon said.

Cannon stepped up to the plate down two runs in the bottom of the seventh with runners at first and second. One swing later, the shortstop sent a rocket over the left field fence, clinching the win for City College.

The Vaqs finished their season 31-5 and secured the Western State Conference Gold Division.

“I was just trying to make contact,” Cannon said.

It was Cannon’s second walk-off home run of the year.

Kailey Snyder, who was named the state athlete of the month in March, improved her record to 27-4 with 14 strikeouts in the game.

Snyder came into the game with an earned run average of .89, but gave up six runs on eight hits.

Hancock’s starting pitcher, Britany Matlock, and Caitlin Voss each hit solo home runs off Snyder.

Snyder had only given up three home runs total in 31 appearances prior to Tuesday’s game.

“Today was not my best game,” Snyder said. “I am just glad my teammates were able to help me out on the offensive side.”

Hancock took a 4-0 lead after the top of the second inning with solid hitting.

City College then scored two runs with RBIs from Cannon and Jasmyne Holmes.

The game was deadlocked at 4-2 until the final inning when Hancock tallied two additional runs off Snyder, increasing the lead to 6-2 heading into the final half frame.

Nicole Adair drove in two runs with a double to right-center, cutting Hancock’s lead to 6-4.

With Adair on second, Snyder walked and set the stage for Cannon’s late-game heroics.

“I felt really confident with Laura at the plate,” coach Paula Congleton said. “We were flat and unfocused at the start. Give Hancock credit, they came after us. Finally, we got it together in the seventh and hitting is contagious.”

The Vaqueros will compete in the first round of the Southern Cal Regional playoffs, a best 2-of-3 series, on May 7 through 8. The opponent and site will be announced this weekend.
