Sophomore Chris Vines put in a career-high 32 points in the game. Vines shot 63 percent from the field and 10-15 from the free-throw line.

Forward Richard Somdah was the second leading scorer for City College with 23. He also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Sophomore guard Steven Saenz added 11.

The game reiterated head coach Morris Hodges’ attention to veteran leadership. The sophomores combined for 66 of the Vaqueros 86 overall points.

Victor Valley was within a point with 6:20 left in the game until the Vaqueros went on a 15-7 run to push the lead back to nine. First-year guard Eric Braun and Somdah both hit two clutch free throws to seal the deal in the closing minutes.

The Vaqueros lost in the first game of the Glendale tournament in a 106-78 rout to the Compton Tartars. The free-throw disparity was too large as Compton outscored City College 36 to 13 at the line. The Vaqueros also committed 32 turnovers in the blowout.
