Baseball goes undefeated at home Channel Coast Tournament

The Vaqueros went 3-0 over the weekend in the Channel Coast Baseball Tournament at Pershing Park behind the arms of their starting pitching and resilient hitting.

Ryan Gardner started the opener against Porterville and threw six and two-thirds innings. He held the Pirates to two runs on seven hits while fanning nine batters in his second start of the season. Daniel Howell and Connor Rehage hit solo home runs while City College cruised to an 8-3 victory.

McGrew started in the second game against L.A. Valley and allowed three runs on four hits in eight innings of work.

The Vaqs were in a three-run hole, but Danny Cavaletto belted a two-run single to ignite a five-run inning. Steven Keller added a solo home run in the eighth inning and Kyle Turnbull shut the door in the ninth inning on the Monarchs as City College recorded a 7-3 triumph.

Zach Edgington took the mound in the third game and was dominant as he pitched a complete game six-hit gem. Edgington tallied a season high 13 strikeouts against L.A. Mission.

The Eagles took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. City College seized the lead in the eighth inning when Tommy White mashed in Cavaletto with a RBI single. The Vaqs never relinquished the 5-4 lead.

City College boosts its record to 16-9 and has prevailed in nine of its last 10 games. The Vaqueros will look to stay hot when they host Cuesta College 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Pershing Park.
