The City College men’s soccer team claimed first place in the conference after freshman goalkeeper Ismael Guzman lead his team to his third straight shut out, beating Glendale 4-0 on Friday night, and improving the team’s conference record to 3-0-1.
“The boys have got a great belief now,” said head coach John Sisterson. He added that it was only a matter of time before everyone clicked and they started winning games.
The Vaqs scored twice in the opening half, as Kalum Horne put one past the Glendale keeper after a great pass from sophomore striker Danny Molineaux in the 34th minute. Freshman midfielder Diego Diaz Duenas added the second goal in the 39th minute to give the Vaqs a comfortable two-goal lead.
In the 56th minute, freshman Lee Jackson scored the third goal after a pass from Ryan McGavigan. Two minutes later, it was striker Danny Molineaux who added his name to the score sheet, expanding the lead to 4-0. The Vaqs defense would keep it up the rest of the game to shut out the Gauchos.
In their last three games the Vaqs have outscored their opponents 8-0, leaving players and coaches hopeful for a bright season.
The Vaqueros next game will be on Oct. 13, against Moorpark at SBCC’s La Playa stadium at 7:30.
