Column: Palin’s new group only wants to derail current government

As if the Tea Party wasn’t lunatic enough, a group of conservative women led by Sarah Palin called the “Mama Grizzly Bears” recently entered the political scene.

A “mama grizzly” is fearless and ready to fight for her ideals without having anyone interrupt it; she is a roaring, non-negotiable politician with maternal instincts ready to protect whatever she needs to protect. With “common sense,” she wants to “take back America,” and protect her baby bears against the White House’s “destructive” policies.

Palin is joined by a sloth of other high profile conservative Christian politicians such as Christine O’Donnell, Nikki Haley, Michelle Bachmann and Christie Angle. They preach the importance of children and how harmful an excessive government is.

Assuming that we are all created equal (as the Declaration of Independence suggests), the grizzlies should strive to improve America for the benefit of every child. One can’t run for office on the basis that we need to take care of our kids, and improve their life quality, if you only mean your own children.

But that’s what appears to be what’s going on. According to a recent Newsweek article, the bears have, with few exceptions, done little for America’s cubs as a whole. According to a study by Children’s Defense Fund from 2008, (when the recession began) 14.1 million children lived in poverty, with more than 5.6 million living at half of the poverty level or less.

With this in mind, it is hard to see how the grizzlies have tried to care for America’s children when they, among other things: voted against Obama’s healthcare plan, voted against increasing Pell Grants, and voted against a bill that would give parents four weeks of paid maternity leave.

What the mama grizzlies have done though, is fiercely advocate against abortion; both in obvious and less obvious ways. Palin has continuously spoken at pro-life events. She also made sure funding for support of young parents in Alaska was available. Could it possibly have anything to do with the fact that her daughter had a child at age 17?

Additionally, Bachmann supported the Positive Alternatives Act, which provided over $2 million to programs that encourage women to have their children instead of abortion by providing support.

The grizzlies reasoning for opposing abortion is that the unborn children—the “not-yet born cubs”—are the most vulnerable.

Angle has the toughest take on it. In a radio interview she answered what she would say to a young girl who had been raped by her father with “two wrongs don’t make a right.”

How this is helping either the young girl who was raped, or the unwanted child she’s carrying to a better life and brighter future, I find impossible to see.

The grizzlies’ ideas may not seem so bad to many. What Palin and her pack say may seem like a no-brainer if you’re already on the right.

But don’t let the bears fool you. There is nothing in their politics that is going to benefit America’s kids—or your kid for that matter—now or in the long run.
