Editorial – Road rage

For some, it’s a recurring nightmare. For others, it’s a slow drive on the road to insanity. It’s something nearly every City College student experiences: parking problems.

Here on campus, the parking situation rivals the seventh circle of hell.

Mondays through Thursdays, morning to afternoon, 5,853 students circle the full structures and lots that their $30 permits allow them to park in. But only 1,890 spaces are free for the taking.

Students in cars stalk students on foot, as they make their way to their parked vehicles. Tires skid as they whizz in and out of aisles.

Frustration turns into bitter arguments, which in turn become fistfights. The parking lots have seen it all.

Naturally, tensions rise. Naturally, people get upset. Regrettably, countless students resort to the infantile fights that only make these lots a hellish place to be.

Crime reports have described students as “highly agitated” and “volatile” in City College parking lots.

One student, having parked past his paid meter time, received a citation from a security officer.

He threatened to get a lawyer and sue the college.

After an argument between two students over a particular parking stall, a security officer stepped in, giving the stall to one student.

The driver who got the spot returned later to find his driver’s seat drenched in syrup.

Another student sat in his parked car, waiting to give the stall to a friend. An outraged student witness, having been denied the parking spot, confronted him.

They fought, throwing punches and ripping each other’s shirts.

On numerous occasions, students have been issued citations for phony parking permits. They range from colored-in parking permit photocopies taped to their windshields to people parking with stolen handicapped placards.

Although it exists, hostility shouldn’t be a reason for vandalism, petty fraud and embarrassing brawls.

Every student is responsible for getting to class on time, even when the parking lot fails them. We’ve been attending school for enough weeks now to understand that it’s likely to happen.

Can’t find a solution?

Try carpooling. Those lots usually don’t fill up even by the time the 11:15 a.m. classes roll around.

Or take the bus. Nobody ever parks at bus stops, do they?

Consider investing in a scooter, or just ride your bike. Those students never have to worry about parking, nor pay for it.

Come to school early. Park off campus. Walk.

This is what the students getting to class on time are doing.

There are too many ways-easy ways-to sidestep parking issues for the atmosphere to be like this. Parking distress can be avoided, so do it.

Right now, parking lot tensions are at a 10. Let’s bring it down to a two.
