The Associated Student Government (ASG) held their meeting Friday April 18 which discussed decisions that will directly affect the City College’s student body and also oversee all clubs on campus.
Marine biology professor Michelle Paddack visited the meeting to give a presentation on the Sustainability Project Committee process.
Paddack explained to ASG that the Sustainability Committee recently met to discuss past issues and rework them. There will be a Student Sustainability Fee Committee as well as a Sustainability Club where students will be able to convene. Students in this club will first do outreach to gauge what their focus should be. The project application is once a semester because the fund refills every semester, once in early fall and once in spring.
Students on the committee wanted to continue a student presentation process which will still be happening in front of the committee instead of just ASG. The committee will then rank each project where an appointed student liaison will come to ASG to present the committee’s ranking and summarize each of the projects. The dean of finance and head of facilities will also look over each project application to assess its feasibility.
Students Monica Vitor and Nina Fournier came back to present the revised Sustainability Project, Plastic Free Revolution idea. Commissioner of Fundraising Marco Bonometti moved to allocate $1000 to this project, seconded by Commissioner of Marketing Hannah Jensen.
Moreover Marlon Valentino, a music club representative, came back to present a revised and itemized requested budget to ASG which was discussed at the April 11 meeting. The total amount requested was $400. Jensen moved to allocate this amount from club grants, seconded by Bonometti.
Another important point that was discussed during the meeting was an ASG suggestion box for the Library. Commissioner of Accessibility Sam Gustafson re-emphasized the importance of ASG being the voice for its students. As a result of the Town Hall event that was recently held and some form responses, Gustafson proposed purchasing a suggestion box to be installed by the Library. These suggestions will be 100% anonymous. Bonometti moved to allocate $150 from the activity budget.
ASG and City College Ambassadors’ prom was also among the topics discussed during the meeting. This event is set for May 10, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
A formal, elegant and masquerade dress code was established. Bonometti explained that the requested budget is $700 to split the cost for the DJ between ASG and the ambassadors. There will be no admission charge and the event will be free for all students. ASG Adviser Amy Collins suggested having student IDs checked at the door to ensure that this event is strictly for City College students. Commissioner of International Student Affairs Lauren Merz explained that there will be an RSVP form to gauge who will be attending and each guest is allowed a plus one.
“It’s really exciting to see all the board members . . . passionate about getting more feedback from students,” ASG President Raquel Smith said. “Also just continuously implementing a bunch of projects that [ASG] wants to do to increase student engagement.”
The next ASG meeting will be held on April 25.
