On Friday, Feb. 28, the Associated Student Government (ASG) approved the spring budget and discussed the importance of the men’s lacrosse club at City College.
Brandon Revak, the co-president of the Men’s Lacrosse Club, came to the meetings to represent his team which just made its way into division three. Due to this promotion, the team faces many new expensive requirements involving equipment and supplies. The club dues went from $300 to $900 to afford the mandatory uniforms in the lacrosse Division III area.
Revak requested an extra $1,066 to fund flat bottom goals, game balls and a partial reimbursement for the team’s new official helmets.
The extra money would “ease into the transition of becoming a club into a real team,” Revak said.
This expense was presented as an investment for the future of the men’s lacrosse club as they are hoping to reach the official status of a City College sports team.
After Revak gave a detailed plan of the club’s expenses and overall efforts and dedication, the ASG granted the club their requested budget.
Although Christopher Johnson, one of the ASG advisors approved of the decision, he expressed his concern about clubs making a habit of expecting reimbursement for non pre-approved budgets.
The ASG also granted the Pre-Health Club and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Club $400 each. The Pre-Health Club will use the money to fund CPR certification courses, not only reserved to club members but to any student interested in the formation.
The WISE Club will use the extra budget to fund a two-day career fair in collaboration with UMOJA. The event will take place March 12 and 13, and will display different career paths with workshops. Lunch will be provided both days for participants with Mediterranean and Indian food caterers.
The new Hearts and Hands, and Peace and Unity clubs were approved by ASG. The Hearts and Hands Club aims to collect money, clothes, and food for homeless people, they will also throw events once to twice a month. The club will meet every other week.
Peace and Unity Club aims to help students in every area of their lives, but has yet to present a clearer and applicable plan to do so.
Moving on from clubs, the ASG is planning a movie night for Women’s History Month. The movie has yet to be decided, but “Legally Blonde” seems to be ASG’s favorite at the moment. The event is planned to be held at 6 p.m. March 20 at The Fé Bland Forum of City College’s West Campus. The date still has to be confirmed.
A committee for commencement marketing was created by Hannah Jensen, commissioner of marketing for the ASG. It aims to accompany and help people to get their diplomas.
A sustainability fee supporting projects in sustainability at City College will be discussed more next meeting.
The next ASG meeting will be Friday, March 7.
