Completed ASG board talks DSPS, pre-veterinary club and the Circle K

ASG

The Associated Student Government met for the first time this semester with a complete panel on Oct. 13, and hit the ground running after approving new clubs and announcing upcoming campus events.

Kicking off the meeting, Alexia Baca was elected as commissioner of accessibility, finalizing the ASG board. Baca plans to strengthen the relationship students and the ASG have with City College’s Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS).

“I would make [DSPS] more accessible, and easier for them to communicate with me as an asset,” Baca said. She plans to execute this by creating more office hours so students have increased accessibility to support.

“I would want to make [students with disabilities and special needs] feel that we are all in a campus where inclusivity and respect are important,” Baca said, as she closed her response to the interview questionnaire.

Students Callista Tai, Samantha Lewis and Grayson Deshler will be introducing a pre-veterinary club to the City College campus. The club president Deshler and co-presidents Lewis and Tai plan to invite professionals to hold Q-and-A workshops, partner with animal rescue organizations, organize workshops and orchestrate group volunteer projects.

The club will be open to any students studying veterinary medicine or interested in the field. The club organizers do not have a room dedicated to meetings nor a set time, but plan on offering both an in-person meeting experience and an online option to increase accessibility to busy students.

The ASG also approved the Circle K International Club founded by Isabella Lam and Val Zhou. The new club is a sub-branch of the global Kiwanis Club, which is dedicated to providing support for communities and children specifically. Circle K will be an outlet for students to access volunteer opportunities in the Santa Barbara community. The events will be promoted by Kiwanis, allowing students to log their volunteer time as service hours to be used on college applications.

On Tuesday Oct. 24, City College will be hosting the Vitalant Blood Drive in front of the Luria Library. In the week of Oct. 16, the ASG will be running a sign-up station on campus and an online sign up option will also be available.

The ASG will meet again next Friday, Oct. 20.
