Facilities dept. left with 4 empty positions, no plans to replace

Senior director of facilities, planning and campus development, plus three other positions in the facilities and operations department are being vacated, with no immediate timeline for replacement.

Facilities Director Julie Hendricks, whose official last day of employment at the college was Friday, Nov. 18, accepted a position as director of site development for the South Orange County Community College District.

Tina Villegas, administrative assistant for the facilities and operations department, also confirmed that she will be retiring in May 2017, as part of City College’s Supplemental Early Retirement Program.

Custodial Supervisor Gaspar Lomeli and Maintenance Supervisor Brad Gyll will also be vacating their positions at the end of the year.

Project Manager Jay Sullivan said the timeline for replacing these positions is uncertain.

“We had a lot of meetings with staff,” he said, “meetings going all the way up to the Chancellor. [We’re] looking to reorganize and optimize the remaining staff.”

Villegas said the staff will have to prioritize work orders to meet City College’s maintenance demands.

“Staff is going to have to readjust to the demands,” Villegas said. “Our office will do whatever we can to work with a limited staff.”

Villegas said she believes the department will have to restructure, which is a decision the upper management will make. She also said the staff will have to prioritize tasks and take part in contributing to maintain the campus.

“I don’t know exactly what the plan is,” Villegas said. “That’s why we’re all just waiting,”
