Update: Group continues to discuss alternative parking

The second Transportation Alternatives Group meeting held Friday discussed the pros and cons of different parking solutions.

About 20 staff members and Santa Barbara city representatives were in attendance to help focus the group’s goals.

“[We] need to combine incentives and disincentives, that’s where we will get the most bang for our buck,” said Joe Sullivan, vice president of business services.

With 70 percent of City College students living within eight miles of the college, the demand on parking could be lessened with the promotion of alternative transportation.

The remaining ideas on the chopping block, which will be focused in upcoming meetings, were talked about in depth to find long and short-term solutions.

Solutions include expanding campus parking, developing offsite parking with shuttles and charging faculty to park on campus while offering incentives to those who don’t drive.

In order to create a culture shift away from driving to school, the group discussed marketing and improving conditions for those who use alternate forms of transportation.

“I probably won’t make too many friends with this,” said Library Director Kenley Neufeld. “Part of the reason you ride a bike or skateboard is for ease of access on the campus not just to the campus.”

Main points were what the investment and return on investment would be for each idea.

The mission for the group stands at reducing the demand on parking by students and faculty alike.

“My goal really is to see what we can implement near term and long term,” concluded Sullivan.
