The adult education community met Friday at one of three public forums to gather ideas for course offerings at the new Center for Lifelong Learning.

As of Nov. 26, the center has 20 applicants in their nationwide search for an executive director. Dr. Jack Friedlander, executive vice president of educational programs, said he expects more than 100 applicants by Jan. 3 when the job search concludes.

“I strongly believe if we do this right, and we provide great education for these students, they’re going to contribute back to the college, including to students in our credit program,” Friedlander said. “And I think the college as a whole will benefit immensely because [the adult education community] will have a fond memory of the loyalty of the college.”

The center, set to open fall 2013, allows City College to offer classes that will be affordable to students but remain financially independent from the college. Classes will be held at the Schott and Wake Center.

“My dream is that we will someday build a separate building,” Friedlander said.

Community volunteers meet weekly to lay the groundwork for this program and meet frequently with Friedlander to discuss curriculum, financial models and marketing for the center.

“The Center for Lifelong Learning is one of the finest efforts I’ve ever involved myself in and I’ve enjoyed it immensely,” said Cathie Smith, who has been a strong advocate and active member in the establishment of the center.

Courses and activities being discussed for future terms at the center include anything from career planning and sports strategy classes to local museum tour field trips.

“The sky is the limit,” said Friedlander.

Additional public forums will continue to be held in upcoming months. For more information about the center contact Andy Harper, [email protected].
