Brief – College offers free tax help

Students who want help preparing their 2008 tax forms can find it on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays free of charge.

Until April 14, help will be available to City College students looking to file any one of a variety of forms, ranging from the 1040EZ to the 8812 – Additional Child Tax Credit.

The free walk-in service will be from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Campus Center – Room 223.

Appointments are unavailable. However, student program advisor Amy Collins recommends that those interested do not procrastinate.

“Be prepared to wait if you wait ’til the last minute,” Collins said, noting that lines for consultation may grow longer as the April 15 tax deadline approaches.

Bringing proof of identification for yourself and/or spouse, current W-2s and 1099s, as well as a copy of last year’s return and any information regarding income, deductions and credits are advised.

Tax returns must be postmarked no later than midnight, April 15. Further information is available at www.irs.gov.
