Voices of retiring facuty

Rick Mokler
20-year Associate Professor
Theater Arts
“I don’t think I can name just one thing that I will miss most about City College. There is so much that I will miss: the clever and funny acting students, my talented colleagues, and our audiences who appreciate what we do. I am surrounded by caring people who demand excellence of themselves and each other. In fact, the desire to excel is an innate part of this institution and I will take that with me.”

Mary Gibson
23-year Associate Professor
Theater Arts
“I will miss interacting with my students and colleagues on a daily basis the most and being a part of a place that strives to be the best and turn out leaders and fully developed citizens for our world. I will miss students who teach me as I teach them. And colleagues who are genuinely concerned that their students not only learn the material in their classes, but learn HOW to learn and to create a life-long desire for learning. And, of course, I will miss the beautiful view of the ocean!”

Karolyn Hanna
30-year Professor Associate
Degree Nursing
“The immediate thought that came into my mind was “It’s the People!” And the people that I’ll miss most are both my students and my colleagues across campus.

As a teacher, I love my students. They bring new energy to the classes I teach and in many ways, help me feel young, renewed, refreshed. Witnessing the transformation as they study and learn and change from timid new students who know very little (or nothing) about nursing, to becoming self-confident, highly effective registered nurses (RNs) who work as professional colleagues in local healthcare facilities, is an awesome experience.

But even more than missing the students, I will miss the faculty, staff, administrators and members of the Board of Trustees with whom I’ve been privileged to work during my 30 years at City College. We are truly fortunate to have an unusually high degree of professionalism among and between all levels of personnel on campus. As we’ve sat in meetings, we may have disagreed on specific issues, but have almost always been able to come to agreement about what is best for the institution and for the students we serve. When walking on campus seeing these same individuals, I’ve always been greeted with a wave, a smile or a hug. It is this climate of cooperation that has allowed us to collectively achieve so much and become one of the best community colleges in California. Having met and worked with individuals from other campuses across the state, the level of collegiality and mutual that exists here is truly unique. I will most certainly miss all of the people who are City College!

Patricia Nunez
26-year Professor Education
“There are so many things that I will miss. I will really miss my colleagues and the students. Being around other faculty has always been a joy, and the students have kept me from growing old. I will definitely miss being in an academic environment, where you can discuss a variety of topics. I will miss gazing out my window and seeing the ocean. I have been very fortunate to have spent the majority of my teaching career at City College, and I will miss it.”
