CD Review – ‘Under Great White Northern Lights’ by the White Stripes

With the release of The White Stripes‘ new album we are reminded that raw, live music can also be harmonious and pumped with energy.

Out March 16, the album-DVD combination was recorded live during their tour in Canada three years ago.

Songs that made the band famous, such as “Seven Nation Army” and “Icky Thump,” are given live renditions and are more haunting and powerful than the studio versions.

Lead vocalist Jack White rasps his emotions to the melodies, and there is no other voice that would be better for the part.

The tracks on the album that incorporate Celtic and Scottish accents are a stark contrast to other more voracious titles that give White the opportunity to scream for the sake of it.

If you’re in the mood for a rollercoaster ride, The White Stripes is the band of choice. Few bands can boast the incorporation of “horror-movie” organs, psychedelic undertones and Celtic melodies in their songs, least of all jam-packed into one CD.
