CD Review – “Y Not?” by Ringo Starr

Why own Ringo Starr‘s newest album? The title song “Why Not?” won’t give you the answer.

Unlike many musicians, Starr’s style is not fixed to make every cut sound the same. His songs ring familiar to the Beatles, yet are made uniquely his own.

Instead of jumping immediately into the lyrics, most titles include an interlude so enjoyable one almost hopes the lyrics never come. But when they do, Starr’s diction is clear and precise.

Unfortunately, nearly every phrase he sings is cliché. It’s amazing anyone can string so many of them together and still have a coherent result.

The title song “Why Not?” is simply better when it’s skipped.

So, if you enjoy lyrics with deep meaning, or new and unusual music, this is not the CD for you. But if you seek the warm familiarity of an old friend, then “why not” add it to your collection?
