CD Review – Editors

“In This Light and On This Evening,” the third album from Editors, released Oct. 13, mixes punchy rock sounds with moody electronic music creating a muddy combination.

A new direction for the British indie band, this latest work is darker and feels more forced than their earlier work. Things start off slow with the title track, “Bricks and Mortar.” Any lyrics in the tracks are hard to distinguish on just one listen. But “Papillion” and “You Don’t Know Love” are at least more energetic, even though they sound like covers of unimpressive ’80s songs.

Those four songs sum up the entire compilation, as nothing from this release particularly stands out, and by the end it all feels tired.

“In This Light and On This Evening” proves that different doesn’t necessarily mean better and, while they should be commended for trying something new, Editors should stick with what they do best.
