Faculty updates honesty policy

Dishonest students will have a harder time cheating at City College under an updated Academic Honesty Policy that is being proposed by instructors.

“This policy’s gone from about one page to seven,” Dan Wrentmore said, who presented the reformed policy to the Academic Senate on Wednesday, Feb. 25 on behalf of the Academic Policies Committee.

The Academic “Integrity” Policy, as it would be re-named, has been edited of its unfair vagueness.

Currently, instructors hold ultimate discretion in failing and passing students based on how they interpret today’s policy. The new policy would limit ambiguity by distinctly stating instructors’ abilities.

Also, many students have trouble fully understanding which actions are considered dishonest. The current policy gives the students far too much credibility and room to shirk conviction, as expressed by Wrentmore.

The new Integrity Policy heavily expands on what the definition of cheating really is.

“It gives a much clearer roadmap for teachers to follow,” Professor Jan Schultz of the Earth Sciences Department said. “And more importantly, for the students as well.”

Newly defined acts of cheating include fraudulences such as signing another student’s name on an attendance sheet or using someone else’s identification card to exercise in the Life Fitness Center.

“I looked at it from the students point of view, and the clarity really helped,” Schultz continued.

The proposed policy is also broadened for the setting of online classes.

The extensive research put into the new content for the Academic Integrity Policy prompted a major commendation to Wrentmore from his peers.

“I know how much work you did,” Business Professor Esther Frankel said. “It’s truly amazing.” ? ? ?
