Golfers bogie approach at finals

The women’s golf team took fourth place on Monday Nov. 7 at the Southern California Regional Playoffs, finishing out its season early.

“We didn’t make it to state,” said player Victoria Alimonda of the team’s failure to win at the regional playoffs and advance to the Southern California State Championship. “Everybody was so frustrated about it.”

Mt. San Antonio College took first place at regional playoffs who has won three out of the five last years, with Moorpark College and Long Beach City College coming in at second and third, respectively.

In spite of not getting the chance to compete at the state level, women’s golf at City College can boast of several other accomplishments this year.

“We won the Western State Conference,” Alimonda said. Head coach Chuck Melendez was also voted Coach of the Year, she added.

Alimonda had been leading the league in stroke average and her fellow team member Maryanne Watson has made First Team All-League in the previous year.

Although Melendez was unavailable for comment, before the regional playoffs he said that the team had gone to the state playoffs three out of the last four years. It was the third best team in the state last year.

“Now we know that we have to practice harder,” Alimonda said. She said that part of the reason that the competition placed higher was that they played a more consistent game.

“They had a good average of scores,” Alimonda said. “We had high scores and low scores.”

Before regional playoffs, Watson had said it would “definitely be a challenge” to make it to the state level because of stiffer competition this season.

Watson confirmed that it was a competitive game at this year’s regional playoffs.

The women’s golf team has a good record in its league, and members say that the following season should be one to look forward to.

“A bunch of new recruits are coming in,” Watson said of next year’s brand new team.

Alimonda will be the only returning player from this year’s team.

“Next year we really want to win,” Alimonda said.
