First choice on new faculty

City College got their first choice on new faculty to fill every position after retiring faculty, despite Santa Barbara’s high living costs.

“Fortunately we’ve found faculty that can build upon the tradition of excellence that has been developed,” said Dr. Jack Friedlander, vice president of Educational Programs. “I’m very excited about the quality of talent that will be added to the school.”

Twenty-two full-time faculty members have been hired to fill positions after the 13 faculty members who retire after this semester.

Lana Rose, who will handle new faculty orientation before retiring in August, said the advice she’d like to give them is to create opportunities for themselves.

“It’s a very supportive college if you have good ideas,” she said.

Friedlander said that some of the newly hired already work at school part time. He also said that about 50 percent of the new faculty have to move to Santa Barbara for their job. Friedlander explained that they hired a lot of staff in the 1970s, when Community Colleges were expanding all over California. Most of them were then in their 30s and will therefore retire in the next two years. So, he added, that even if Santa Barbara’s high house prices did not interfere with the recruiting this time, it’s something to continue worry about.
