Stay away from I.V. warn UCSB chiefs

UCSB officials are warning City College students and their out-of-town friends that staying away from Isla Vista this Halloween may be in their best interest.
As Oct. 31 creeps up, the university is beefing up security to protect the one square mile radius of Isla Vista.
An extra 100 deputies will be deployed, some on horseback, to patrol the area.
“The increase [in security] is due to safety concerns,” said Carolyn Buford, associate dean of students at UCSB.
Since the Sheriff’s Department has adopted a no-tolerance policy in Isla Vista, students will be arrested instead of cited.
The most common violations that students are expected to be arrested for include open containers in public, minor in possession of alcohol, public intoxication and public urination.
Students are also told not to bring out of town visitors for this holiday as it could most likely lead to an “overnight stay” in the Santa Barbara County Jail. In the past, these visitors have been known to make up to 80 percent of people arrested each year.
The Outdoor Festival Ordinance that will be put in effect bans amplified live or prerecorded music that can be heard 100 feet from the property. People violating the ordinance will be cited.
A statement was issued by the office of student life at UCSB: “We hope that your students will consider the risks and possible penalties of coming to Isla Vista this year and decide to stay away for their own safety and protection.”
